Beyond the Bay Oval Lights 6
Edition Six - December 2019
One regular visitor to the Bay Oval has rubbed shoulders with many of the stars of international cricket. Black Caps High Performance Logistics Manager Rihanna Muller, has travelled the world first with the South African cricket team before joining the Black Caps support team in 2016.
"I started with Cricket South Africa (CSA) in 2004 as the national team’s sports therapist. My first test match was against England at St Georges Park in Port Elizabeth in 2004". “While I had never played cricket at that level, I had set my goals to work in international cricket, as I love the sport and the passion that comes from it".
"In 2011 the Team Manager stepped down and his role was split into two positions of Team Manager and Logistics Manager and after making an application was appointed the team Logistics Manager".
Riaan first came to New Zealand in 2004. "It was a very challenging tour for the South Africans, drawing the test series and losing the ODI series and the retirement of Gary Kirsten". "From the first time that I landed in New Zealand I fell in love with the place, but never thought it would bring me here to live. It was beautiful and friendly and everyone made us feel very welcome".
"On the cricket field it was a different story, as the Black Caps played good cricket and it was very challenging in New Zealand's cold climate".
When asked what brought the Muller family to New Zealand, Riaan said “New Zealand Cricket had a position that had become available in 2016 and at the time I was looking to make a move out of Africa, as I had a young family and wanted better opportunities for them". "Having toured New Zealand on multiple occasions, my wife Elanza and myself said, let's give this a go and if we get it, we will be very grateful".
"My current role is the Black Caps High Performance Logistics Manager and I love every moment of it. The work is similar to what I did for CSA and my colleagues are so helpful and friendly. We form a great team that trust each other and work together as one big family".
Riaan reserved special praise for the Bay Oval. "I have been to the Bay Oval many times and really love coming back every time. The Bay Oval crew are the people that make you want to come back. They always put up a great show on and off the field, together with always being available to assist with any request".
