International Cricket Reports from the Bay Oval

Coincidence has twice struck the Black Cap verses the West Indies T20 encounters at the Bay Oval, with a double Black Cap record innings and two rained out matches.

On Sunday (29 November 2020) Black Cap batman Glenn Phillips went ballistic, after the New Zealand side batted first in the second match-up of three game T20 International series. The Black Caps set the Windies batsmen a very big target after reaching 238 for the loss of just three wickets.

Glenn Phillips raced to the fastest Black Caps century, off just 46 balls, eclipsing the previous record set by Colin Munro against the West Indies on the 3 January 2018 when Munro reached his ton off 47 balls.

Sunday’s effort saw Phillips set new Black Cap T20 international partnership records, with Black Cap new recruit Devon Conway, who belted an unbeaten 65 off 37 balls. The pair set a new third wicket and all-wickets record, when Phillips finished with 108 runs off 51 balls, which included ten 4’s and eight big shots over the boundary ropes.

The Black Caps wrapped up the three match series, in game two, when they restricted their opponents to 166 for the loss of nine wickets. Kyle Jamieson was the best of the New Zealand side bowlers taking two wickets at a cost of 15 runs with Mitchell Santner returning 2/41.

The dead rubber match on Monday (30 November 2020) evening lasted just 14 balls, with the West Indies reaching 25 for the loss of one wicket, before the match was finally abandoned. This result mirrored the West Indies first visit to the Bay Oval in January 2018, when game one was abandoned, with the Black Caps reaching 102/4 before the game was cut short without a result being achieved.
