Two Bay of Plenty cricket players who call the Bay Oval home had plenty to celebrate when the new 2014-15 Northern Districts professional player contracts were announced in mid-July.

Wicketkeeper, Ben Pomare, and right-hand top-order batsman, Fergus Lellman, join the ND Major Association contract list for the first time. Both players have become regular fixtures in the Northern Districts A side and have played a handful of matches for the ND First XI.

The ND debutants in waiting, were both selected for the New Zealand Under 19 team in 2019-20 season. Ben Pomare took seven catches behind the stumps and contributed a handy 132 runs. Fergus Lellman, was an anchor at the top of the innings in the Under 19 World Cup campaign, with a top score of 116no amongst his 431 runs.

Both have been regular Bay of Plenty representative team members, with Pomare given the skippers' role in last three seasons. The Bay keeper has hit 767 runs in 35 appearances with a top score of 77.

Fraser Lellman has belted two centuries with a best of 136 in compiling 866 runs. He has a sought-after Bay Oval century in his Cricket CV after he belted 119 against Northland in the 2022-23 season.

The two newcomers will join four fellow Bay of Plenty players in the ND squad. Joe Carter, Brett Hampton, Bharat Popli and Neil Wagner when available, have been part of the ND core in recent seasons.

Neil Wagner has become a real Bay Oval favourite since he moved to Papamoa a few years ago. He has taken 49 first-class bowling scalps at the Blake Park ground including a best of five for 44.

Bharat Popli and Joe Carter have both made their mark on the Western Bay of Plenty wicket blocks. Few players can dig in at the crease like Carter. He has posted 626 first-class runs at the Bay Oval, with a best of  146 not out, in producing an impressive average of 48.15

Bharat Popli’s 10 first-class games on the Bay Oval, have been rewarded with 781 runs with a top score of 111, at an average of 43.38. Popli at his best is a delight to watch as he crafts a innings together with a full range of shots.

Versatility in spades is the key ingredient of Brett Hampton. He has hit over 3500 runs and taken 147 wickets in the three forms of the game and can be a game-changer with the ball when called to the bowling crease.
